Follow the series;

Miles Davis- 20.10.14 – 8.00 on Breakfast + 18.00 on Drivetime

Otherwise known as The King of Blue., Miles Davis is epitome of cool, an eternally evolving trumpeter who repeatedly changed the course of jazz between the 1950s and 1990’s. Miles Davis achievements and innovations catapulted him to the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, and hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. In the 1950’s his notable album “Kind of Blue” has gone four times platinum and has been honoured as a “masterpiece” by the Recording Industry Association of America. It has been argued that Jazz stopped evolving when Davis was no longer there to push it forward. The trumpet master and musical force sadly passed away in 1991.

George Clinton - 21.10.14 – 08.00 on Breakfast + 17.30 on Drivetime

He is a classic leader of the P-Funk movement, (parliament funk). Clinton explored electro-funk as a solo artists and produced music that majorly influenced hip-hop music to follow. He has been cited as one of the foremost innovators of funk music, along with James Brown and Sly Stone. Some of his more notable records include “Dr Funkenstein”, “Erotic City”, “Knee Deep” and “Atomic Dog” which was sampled on Snoop Dogg’s “What’s my name?.. Clinton has firmly stamped his flamboyant self on the music history books forever,  twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late-’60s acid heroes.. The Parliament/Funkadelic machine ruled black music during the ’70s, capturing over 40 R&B hit singles (including three number ones) and recording three.

Gregory Isaacs – 22.10.14 – 08.00 on Breakfast + 17.30 on Drivetime

Described as “the most exquisite vocalist in reggae”, Isaacs nickname was the Cool Ruler. His languid vocals made him an icon of sensuality. One of Jamaica’s most beloved vocalists was as pertinent in dancehalls as he was in the hearts of the people of his country. Gregory Isaacs’ career stretched over 30 years before his untimely death in 2010. From the heady days of reggae through lovers rock, a genre he virtually invented, his talent reached into the modern age. It’s been estimated that the singer released up to 500 albums (including compilations) in Jamaica, the U.K., and the U.S. combined. Songs like “Night Nurse”, “Rumours”, “Babylon Too Rough” and “My Only Lover” and “If I Don’t Have You” to name a few, still ring through the halls of reggae music reaffirming the superstar status of Gregory Isaacs. .

Marvin Gaye - 23.10.14 – 08.00 on  Breakfast + 17.30 on Drivetime

Marvin Gaye was a soul singer-songwriter who was one of the most prominent artists of the Motown era. He produced his own records and often addressed controversial themes. Gaye’s later records developed his production style and yielded several hits, including “Let’s Get It On,” “Sexual Healing” and “I Heard it Through the Grapevine In 1970, inspired by escalating violence and political unrest over the Vietnam War, Gaye wrote the landmark song “What’s Going On.” Despite clashes with Motown over the song’s creative direction, the single was released in 1971 and became an instant smash. His inspirational song writing and music production has presented some of the most inexhaustible music of a generation.

KRS 1- 24.10.14  – 08.00 on Breakfast + 17.30 on Drivetime

New York Rapper Lawrence Krisna Parker, better known by his stage names KRS-One or Teacha.
KRS-One rose to prominence as part of the group Boogie Down Productions, which he formed with DJ Scott La Rock in the late 1980s. KRS-One, which stands for “Knowledge reigns supreme over nearly everyone” is noted to be a politically active musician. He started the Stop the Violence Movement, after the Scott La Rock. He also created the organisation “Temple of Hip Hop” which promotes Hip hop as a Culture, genuine political movement and has been accepted by the United Nations as a Religion .At the 2008 BET Awards, KRS-One was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for all his work and effort towards the Stop the Violence Movement as well as the overall pioneering of hip hop music and culture.

Ella Fitzgerald - 25.10.14 – 11.30 +16.30 on Saturday Build Up

Often referred to as the “First Lady of Song,”, Ella Fitzgerald is known for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation and horn- like improvisational ability, Her scat- singing was often laced with an exquisite sadness and an incomparable jazz sound. Her career spanned 60 years and she sold over 40 million copies of her 70 plus albums. JON RUNDELL joins Sy Chan & Friends this Saturday 11pm – 1am !!

The Sy Chan & Friends show showcases electronic artists from all over the globe as well as featuring up coming talent. This Saturday, Sy brings a true techno DJ/Producer onto this weeks show….JON RUNDELL.

Sy adds, “I have admired Jon for many years and fully respect him as a DJ, and an artist. This week will truly be a great show featuring music from house right through to techno, with many promo tracks to feature”.

JON RUNDELL

I think Jon’s a jewel in the crown. He’s really great with the crowd and his music. He’s been a great support to me. Put him in front of 30,000 people and he really goes for it. He naturally warms the crowds up. We always discuss what we’ll both be playing and he goes out there and does it. At the moment he’s better than most top DJs I could mention.” Carl Cox, March 2007.

Jon has never been a follower. Very much his own man, he has never being swayed by trends or fashions. Preferring instead to challenge and ask questions of what’s going on around him, Jon’s output has remained unique and interesting right from the start. Experimental at times, but always matured and versatile, he has remained a highly consistent producer and DJ.

Jon has just stuck to playing and signing good music that he truly believes in throughout his career. He has stuck to his guns – a decision that is now working in his favour, enabling him to play to more and more people each year.

“I don’t want to ram it down people’s necks in a contrived way. I like the music to do the talking and connect with people there and then. When I get the chance to play, I just make sure people have a great time as well as a little bit of education.
